Common milkweed is Nature's mega food market for insects. Over 450 insects are known to feed on some portion of the plant. Most notably, Monarch butterflies are dependent on this species for survival.

You Can Grow Common Milkweed

These seeds require cold stratification to germinate.

Refrigerate seeds for 30 days on a damp paper towel in a plastic bag.

1. Start Seeds In Peat Pots - Place 1-2 cold stratified seeds in each peat pot. Cover with 1/4 inch of soil on top of the seed.

2. Water - Water as needed. You want the soil to feel like a wrung-out sponge - damp but not soggy.

3. Wait - Place in a sunny window, in a greenhouse, or under a grow light. Seeds should germinate and sprout within 10-15 days after planting.

You Can Grow It Big On Your Farmland.

Modern 'compact tractors' and motor tillers grow more plants with less work than ever before. Buy used on Facebook Marketplace to save money, or buy new at Central Jersey Equipment or Weaver's. Check our Recommended Equipment List for the full list of what you may need.

Step 1: Bed

Till the soil and put down a mulch layer. A thick layer of hay is organic and keeps soil moist. You can also use paper mulch or do "plasticulture" instead. Many plants require watering during dry spells through a drip line or sprinkler for best results.

Step 2: Plant

Plant started seedlings into the bed with a hand or mechanized transplanter.

Step 3: Mow

Your seedlings will grow to fruit with minor routine care. Water and fertilize as needed.

Step 4: Market

Sell your produce weekly at farmers markets or 24/7 on Facebook marketplace. High supermarket prices and smartphones make it easier than ever before to sell small farm goods.
